Why buying uniform that lasts makes good economic sense

We’re all noticing how the cost of living is increasing, and this can affect every aspect of our lives, including buying school uniform. When you’re looking to save money, you might consider buying cheap school uniform items from fast fashion stores. While it might be cheaper in the short-term, the saying ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ could end up coming true.

Buying uniform with longevity can really save money long-term. At Trutex, we’re committed to providing uniforms that are made to last – a performance and ethical commitment that has been a core part of our organisation throughout history. By having longer-lasting uniform it means your kids will need fewer items throughout their time at school.

There’s no denying the cost of school uniform can be a big concern for parents. The Schoolwear Association has found the average cost of compulsory school uniform and sportswear items is £101.19 per pupil, and if you have a few children, the cost can quickly add up.

However, as part of the Schoolwear Association’s survey, the purchase history of what was actually sold each year for schools was analysed and showed that on average, the spend per pupil of compulsory items was only £36.24. This shows the financial benefits of buying better quality, longer lasting garments that don’t need to be replaced every year.

Grow out, don’t wear out

It’s our belief that Trutex uniform should be grown out of not worn out, providing more sustainable clothing and better value for parents. We don’t provide fast fashion that’s chucked out at the end of the school year (or even part way through); our uniform is consistent in colour, care and construction, designed to last and is often passed to siblings or sold through second hand uniform shops.

Superior fabrics, construction and performance ensure our products stand up to the rigours of school life. Boys’ trousers often go in the knees – through independent testing, our trousers have performed 100% better than high street and supermarket brands.

Our polo shirts last longer because they don’t shrink or loose shape after washing. In fact, independent tests demonstrated 100% less shrinkage after wash and tumble dry when compared to high street and supermarket brands. Our uniform is all designed to last and stay looking new for longer, saving you money in the long run.

When to spend, when to save

If you’re struggling to afford everything, it’s worth spending a little more on those items you know are going to be worn the most, and then saving elsewhere other items which might not get as much use. Our Stay Smart garment technology makes sure your child’s uniform will look smarter for longer, wear after wear and wash after wash.

It’s also a good idea to think carefully about what your children will actually need for the new school year; one to wear, one to wash and one to store is a good rule of thumb.

Hand me downs and swap shops

If you’ve invested in quality uniform and have more than one child, it’s worth reusing for the next child down.

Parents tell us they’re able to pass uniform from one sibling to another, or give them a second life by donating to charity or their school’s second-hand uniform shop.

If you’re feeling the financial pinch at the moment, get your children’s school together to organise a swap shop. Children can grow at an alarming rate sometimes and most people would prefer their items go to other kids who can use them rather than into landfill.

Hopefully other parents have also invested in Trutex uniforms so you can all benefit!
