Celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee this May half-term

May half-term is nearly upon us and this year there’s something extra to celebrate during the school holidays as it’s Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. This means Her Majesty, The Queen becomes the first British Monarch in history to celebrate 70 years of service.

It also means an extra bank holiday during half-term so there’s plenty of activities you can take part in – here are our most child-friendly ones.

The Big Jubilee Lunch

To coincide with the Platinum Jubilee, The Big Jubilee Lunch will be taking place on Sunday 5 June. Every year since 2009, The Big Lunch has encouraged communities to celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little bit better.

Following the success of the first Big Jubilee Lunch, to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, The Big Lunch aims to bring celebrations into every community again in 2022.

Why not get together with your neighbours or parents of your kids’ school friends to host a street party or jubilee lunch? From Coronation chicken, Battenberg cake, scones and lemonade, everyone can chip in with sandwiches, cakes and drinks. Kids can help out with making food, bunting and any other decorations – if you need some help to get started there’s a free download pack here.

There’s also a nationwide competition running to create a platinum pudding – while it’s now too late to enter the official competition, and we’re waiting to see what the winner is, why not create your own at home? Can your kids think of some fun combinations to make the perfect Jubilee pud?

Design a Jubilee crown

A great crafting project for kids, all they need to do is design a special crown to wear to celebrate the Jubilee weekend. They can make their own from scratch but you can also download and use this template for some help getting started. Get the crayons, paint, glitter and sequins out (and perhaps a bib and a tablecloth if you have little ones) to make your perfect crown for the Platinum Jubilee.

You can then send a picture or video of your children’s finished piece to [email protected] and they’ll feature a selection on the website. Just include your first name, age and town, alongside your entry. Or post your content on social media using #PlatinumJubilee and tagging DCMS using @DCMS on Twitter or @dcmsgovuk on Facebook and Instagram.

There are also lots of other fun creative projects for children of all ages, which you can find here.

The Queen’s Green Canopy

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative to mark the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and invites everyone across the U.K. to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. From individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, and schools, we’re all encouraged to plant trees during the official planting season between October to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.

Check your summer PE kit

Finally, while you’re enjoying the half-term holidays and the Jubilee, don’t forget that all-important school uniform check, especially your kids’ summer PE kit. With the changeable spring/summer weather it’s important your kids can layer up or down for PE lessons.

Our range of PE kit items are suitable for both indoor and outdoor sports. In summertime you’ll probably have plenty of shorts and t-shirts, but it can also be cold so make sure they have a long-sleeved top or fleece and some tracksuit bottoms or long sports socks to keep legs warm if needed.
