Back to School Tips From Mums
Katy Hill our official spokesperson for the Trutex #bTRU2u campaign gives her top tip on buying uniform for the new school year. Katy is a TV and radio presenter and with a daughter about to start secondary school she has had lots of experience of planning for the new school term.
"I'm getting sorted early for Back To School this year as my eldest is starting secondary school! Yikes! Where did that time go? So there's a whole new uniform to get and name - which is a process that makes me feel actively involved in the new chapter. From my side, I always make sure my two have enough uniform for the week, which means I only have to wash it at weekends and don't have any mid-week panics! Also, given that it's the clothing they spend 80% of their time in, I see comfy and practical uniform as a necessity. Uniform is KEY for making the school experience a happy one, as I've learnt this year in my role as Ambassador for the Trutex/Diana Award Anti Bullying Campaign which I've blogged about on www.katyhill.com"

"Sort out the school uniforms early. Check what still fits and what doesn't, then put outgrown uniform aside for younger siblings and the school's secondhand shop. Then buy your new uniform and get it labelled! There could be 400 kids with the same primary school jumper or a 1,000 with the same blazer. Once that is done, you can put it away and relax for the rest of the holidays, knowing you're ahead of the game."

"Check the schools uniform list -Get an up to date uniform list from your childs school and make sure you pay attention to the correct colours and also which items need school logos. These can vary from school to school so it is better to check before making purchases."

"Make sure you name everything! All clothes, including PE pumps, water bottles, lunch boxes, bags, pencil cases, pens etc. It's amazing how many times my kids have lost things at school. I like to buy the stick on labels and the iron on labels as it makes it easier to identify my child's items."

"Want to make life easier? It is thoughtful to invest a little extra in some good quality school uniforms which are either easy-iron or Non-iron and stain resistant! Can't expect the children to always wear aprons while doing arts and crafts! make sure there is room to grow, it's ok to go one size up and fold the cuffs for a while and elasticated trousers and skirts do save some pennies in your wallet!"

My top tip would be to do a trial run of the timings before the first day. Make sure everyone can get up, dressed and ready to go in the time you have allowed. Keep all the essentials, shoes, bags and coats ready by the front door. Make sure everyone knows this is where they should be kept. It saves the last minute panic when you can't find a shoe."
