Activity ideas for the half-term holidays

The first school break of 2022 is coming up and you might be scratching your head with what to do with your kids over the break. February half-term can be tricky as you never know what the weather’s going to be like, but here’s some ideas to keeping your children entertained, whether that’s with friends, family or something just for them.

Activities clubs

Many schools or local sports clubs run activities camps during school holidays. No matter what your kids are into, whether it’s art, sports, gaming or nature, there’s sure to be an activity club they can attend for a day or more. They’re a great way of making new friends outside of their school group and learning new skills.

Holidays

If you’re lucky enough to be going abroad this half-term, make sure you’ve got your kids sorted with all their vaccination/Covid-19 testing requirements. Although testing rules have relaxed for returning to the UK, other countries still have their own rules, so it’s worth checking via the government portal.

Day tripping

Whether that’s to the beach, the countryside or a city visit, there are so many places you can get out and about to in the UK and it doesn’t need to break the bank. A trip out into the fresh air is good for the spirits and can burn off excess energy in your kids. If you’re heading into the city, lots of museums put on special activities and displays during school holidays. Whatever you decide to do, a change of scenery from home can make all the difference.

Teenage kicks

Keeping teens entertained during school holidays can be especially tricky. They often feel too old to do kids activities but aren’t old enough to go out and about on their own too much. An escape room is a great fun activity for teens to do with their friends. They can test out their problem-solving skills, have fun and it gets them off their phones for an hour. It’s also something they can do unsupervised while you know where they are. They’re a great activity to do as a family too as they test a range of skills, some of which your kids will probably beat you at!

Family film night

If it’s cold and dark outside, why not all huddle together for a family film night. Cook your kids’ favourite meal (or even treat yourself to a takeaway) and choose a film to watch together. You can make cinema snacks such as popcorn or cookies, or whip up some mocktails for the kids. You could even invite some of your kids’ friends round and turn it into a sleepover for them instead. If you’re wanting to head out, lots of cinemas are offering deals and discounts on tickets to entice audiences back to the big screen, after being closed for much of the pandemic.

Do a school uniform stock take

We’re getting towards the end of winter and your children might have grown quite a bit since the start of the academic year. Half-term is a great opportunity to check how your kids’ uniform is fitting, its condition and if they need to get anything new before going back to school. If they’ve really outgrown some of their clothes, it might be worth thinking about investing in summer uniform pieces, and layer up rather than buy more cold weather items they might outgrow by next winter. Remember to check their shoes too, as these can get worn out and might not hold up to rainy weather after a while.

Remember, you don’t have to have something planned every day of the holidays. Finding a balance between activities and letting them have a day in front of the TV will hopefully allow your kids to relax and recharge ready for the new school term.
